Our Values

As Unitarian Universalists, we are called to action by the shared values of Unitarian Universalism. These values inform and guide our work as advocates, activists, and seekers of justice. As a statewide action network, Oregon UU Voices For Justice seeks to advance the following values in our state and communities:

Deepening Democracy

We hold the practice of democracy within our denomination and society as sacred. Unitarian Universalists believe that every voice matters and every voice is needed. Unfettered access to the ballot is essential to ensuring every voice is heard. To help realize that vision for American society, over the last several years, we have partnered directly with the communities most subject to voter suppression tactics, especially Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) that experience both systemic policies and threats of violent intimidation to prevent them from exercising their Constitutional rights.

Income Inequality

Our Unitarian Universalist faith calls us to respond to economic injustice and advocate for those among us being harmed by inequity. We know that there is enough for everyone’s need but not enough for greed. We can create a global beloved community based on inclusive sharing of resources and universal sufficiency. We cannot ignore the harm caused by a system that gives control of wealth and resources to a very small percentage of people while many others, including those who carry out the work of the world, struggle to survive. Our sources, principles, and theologies of our faith compel us to act.

Environmental Justice

All life is interconnected. From the forest to the sea to humanity itself, each thread of being is woven into a single fabric of existence. We embrace nature’s beauty and are in awe of its power. We care for our environment so that it may sustain life for generations to come. We do this in partnership with those most impacted by environmental destruction, who are often marginalized in the larger culture. Often these “frontline” communities are impacted hardest and have fewest resources to recover. We collaborate because it is only with the knowledge and experience of these communities that equitable and sustainable change can happen.

Creating a sustainable way of life is central to our view of a just and compassionate world.

Human Rights

As Unitarian Universalists, many of us believe it is up to all of us to affirm and promote the worth and dignity of every person. It is up to us to make sure that we all have equal and sufficient access to all human rights, including the rights to education, healthcare, housing, food, clean water, clean air, and all the rest.

All rights must be guaranteed by the law and funded by governments as directed by the people in whose name those governments operate. Without enforcement and funding, human rights are just words.
