A lot of people say the electoral college is antiquated, even racist, and must be abolished. It’s a bad rap. Yes, people of color and women were denied their access to the ballot box. So were white men if they didn’t own land. Those issues have been swept aside.
So, is all okay now? Not at all. Soon after the nation’s founding, all states adopted a winner-takes-all approach to the electoral college, effectively denying almost half of the ballots cast from ever gaining electoral college representation. As an example, over 69 million ballots were denied their due consideration in the 2024 election. It’s a tragedy. The electoral college is actually an ingenious voting mechanism, but, sadly, the nation mismanages it. We can do better.
A new book entitled, “How to Make All Votes Matter!” introduces a new approach, called Equal Voice Voting, wherein each state’s popular votes are translated into electoral votes for all viable candidates on a proportional basis. The result means that the electoral college results closely mirrors the nation’s popular voting results.
2024 Popular Difference of Trump vs. Harris = 1.47%
2024 Electoral College Difference of Trump vs. Harris = 16%
2024 Equal Voice Voting Difference of Trump vs. Harris = 2.2%
It’s time for the nation to adopt a process that is fairer for all voters, ensuring every vote matters, regardless of which candidate they might select. Equal Voice Voting, exercising the full capabilities of the electoral college, grants representation to the people (ours is a representative democracy), representation to the states (the nation is a republic of sovereign states), and a system of checks and balances by distributing the voting power across the nation.
